October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. One way to participate is BreastFest Baltimore, a fundraiser for the Tyanna Foundation. Breast Cancer doesn’t social distance, but Tyanna does, so this year they’re going virtual with BreastFest in a Bag!

If you are voting via Absentee Ballot and want to avoid the mail, there are several Baltimore City Ballot Drop Box locations. The closest location to Canton is in front of the Southeast Anchor Library at 3601 Eastern Avenue.

Residents, we need your help and quickly. You may not be aware that a bill to allow large advertising billboards to be placed on land owned by the railroads and next to Highways is working its way through City Hall. It might sound like “no big deal” however the law, as written, would allow up to 20 billboards per mile of highway.

Last month we introduced Project #SocialTheSquare and discussed Step One, how we can responsibly dine in the extended outdoor spaces around O’Donnell Square Park. This month we’re focusing on Step Two, supporting our retail and service businesses. From gift buying to dog grooming, dry cleaning to dentistry, pedicures to piercings, haircuts to home rentals, and more… we’ve got you covered.

Recycling pickup is temporarily suspended in Baltimore through November 1, 2020. During this time, DPW will provide 14 locations across the city where residents will be able to dispose of recycling Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. The closest location to Canton is the DPW Marine Operations Facility located at 3311 Eastbourne Avenue off Clinton Street south of Boston Street.

The CCA has formed a workgroup to study and analyze the history of Canton and Baltimore City in order to ensure that our history is accurately and appropriately represented both digitally and in the historical landmarks throughout Canton. The group will outline and then put into action a plan to affect positive and long-term change focusing on a more welcoming, inclusive, and diverse neighborhood.

Last month the CCA installed 33 new commemorative bricks in O’Donnell Square Park via our Buy-A-Brick Program. Neighbors also purchased 17 duplicate bricks to take home or share. Funds from the purchases support the endowment to maintain O'Donnell Square Park.

In the new reality of physically distancing our everyday lives how do we interact responsibly, support our local businesses, and still maintain some level of a social life? Well, that’s not an easy answer, but a group of local neighbors and businesses, led by Torbin Green and backed by the CCA and Team LNC, are trying to help with a new initiative called Project #SocialTheSquare. (And by social, we mean community at a distance!)
