Neighborhood Notes: June 2025

Free Community Pitch-In / Dumpster Day
The CCA is hosting a Community Pitch-In Day featuring a FREE community dumpster on Saturday, June 28. The dumpster will be located on Lakewood Ave just north of Boston St., alongside the Safeway from approximately 9:00 am until full. (Start time may vary as it’s contingent upon DPW’s schedule.) Plan to go early as it usually fills fast. All are invited to Dumpster Dive to divert waste from our landfill as well. New rules apply for 2025, in particular no large appliances, construction debris or yard waste.

Acceptable materials at the dump include household trash, furniture, cans, glass, plastics, paper, and cardboard. No toxic or hazardous waste.

Unacceptable materials include paint, solvents, pesticides, pool chemicals, acids, caustics, gasoline, mercury thermometers/thermostats, syringes, fire extinguishers, propane tanks, helium tanks, batteries, fluorescent light bulbs, tires, metal, yard waste, construction debris, automotive waste/parts, and any other solid, liquid, or gaseous substance that is regulated as hazardous by State or federal law. No “white goods” to include refrigerators, freezers, ovens, washing machines, and dryers.

Are you a dumpster diver? This is also a great opportunity to score items to recycle, reuse, and repurpose. Come on out and take a look!

Canton Canopy Weeding & Watering
Canton Canopy is a volunteer group working with the CCA to increase the trees in Canton. Join them for a Watering and Weeding event on Thursday, June 26 at 6:30 pm. They’ll have tools and gloves… all they need is you! Meet outside of Chris’ Seafood at 801 S. Montford St.

Neighbors interested in reserving Dypski Park for a kid’s party or other special event should contact Shawnte Minor and Ashley Bush at BCRP Permits and Special Events at 410-396-7070 or email park.permits@baltimorecity.gov. The office is open Monday-Wednesday and Friday from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm and closed on Thursdays. Further details on obtaining a permit can be found at https://bcrp.baltimorecity.gov/permitshome and https://bcrp.baltimorecity.gov/private-events. If you host a party at Dypski, we recommend putting up your own sign in advance to share when the space is rented, otherwise the community will not have this information.

Lighthouse Point Marina
Lighthouse Point Marina, 2780 Lighthouse Point E, is the premier destination for boaters docking in Baltimore. With brand-new, gated floating docks,  on-site parking, a modernized boater’s lounge, and premium amenities, they have everything you need for a seamless boating adventure. They also offer fun for our boatless neighbors, too. Pusser’s Landing (formerly Drift Bar), an on-site waterfront restaurant from the group that made Pusser’s Caribbean Grille a maritime staple, will be offering a caribbean- themed menu accented by a Baltimore flair, and tropical cocktails with stunning harbor views.

They recently hosted a Preakness Party featuring a Duck Derby and Hat Contest judged by CCA Marketing Co-Chair and owner of Kik-line Design Julie Kichline and Baltimore clothier and founder of Sharp Dressed Man Christopher Schafer. Canton’s own Cassie Smertycha Chrzanowski took third place with her sunny sunflower chapeau! Her husband, Stas, looked especially dapper as he joined the fun to celebrate his 81st birthday. The Lighthouse Point First Annual Preakness Duck Derby also served as a fundraiser benefiting the Chesapeake Bay Foundation Oyster Restoration Program. General Manager Joel Schlossberg shared they raised $480.00 and they look forward to making this an annual event to continue raising funds for this program.

Baltimore Swim & Social Club
The Baltimore Swim and Social Club at Lighthouse Point, now under new ownership, is an urban resort experience where members can take a dip, sip on cocktails, and enjoy live music. Individual, Couples, and Family memberships are available; however the kiddie pool is currently in need of repair and will not be available for the 2025 season.

Canton Anti-Racism Alliance Update
The Canton Anti-Racism Alliance, in conjunction with the CCA, is unveiling a new historic marker on Juneteenth that shares the history of people enslaved in Canton, with specific individuals found in archival records. While the story of Canton is often told as one of white-centric industry and immigration, we seek to acknowledge that Black people have been a part of its history since the beginning. It is part of the Alliance’s efforts to make sure the neighborhood’s history is accurately documented and that Canton is more inclusive in our historical education as well as in our current actions and mission. The Canton Anti-Racism Alliance is a coalition of volunteers dedicated to affecting long-term, impactful changes to foster a more diverse, equitable, inclusive, and welcoming community. The Alliance hosts a bi-monthly virtual meeting. All are invited to join. To learn more, email President@CantonCommunity.org.
