New DOT Speed Citations

Starting October 1, 2025, the Baltimore City Department of Transportation now issues tiered fines for automated speed citations, replacing the previous flat $40 penalty. The change, authorized by Maryland House Bill 182, aims to deter dangerous speeding and improve roadway safety.

New Fine Structure:

  • 12–15 mph over limit – $40

  • 16–19 mph over limit – $70

  • 20–29 mph over limit – $120

  • 30–39 mph over limit – $230

  • 40+ mph over limit – $425

Automated citations remain civil violations and do not add points to a license, but penalties will now scale with the severity of the offense. Info via the Baltimore City Department of Transportation, September 24, 2025.
