Help Keep Canton’s Community Compost Initiative Going 🌱

The Canton Community Compost Initiative, launched in Spring 2022, has become a valuable neighborhood resource. Without immediate funding, the program may come to an end. We are asking the community to help raise $3,000 to ensure composting can continue in Canton.

How you can help:

  • Make a donation: Every contribution, big or small, helps keep the compost site running and the bins emptied each week. You can donate online here: https://www.cantoncommunity.org/donate (please include “Compost” in the subject line) and be a part of keeping this important community resource alive.

  • Share your skills as a grant writer: If you have experience writing grant proposals, your expertise can help secure long-term funding for the program. Reach out to us at info@CantonCommunity.org to volunteer and make a real difference.

  • Become a business sponsor: Local businesses can support the program while showing their commitment to sustainability. Sponsoring helps cover annual fees and site improvements, and it’s a great way to connect with the community. Email info@CantonCommunity.org to learn more about sponsorship opportunities.

Why composting matters:

  • Adds nutrients to the soil: Compost enriches soil with essential nutrients like carbon and nitrogen, helping plants grow and retain water.

  • Supports healthy soil organisms: Beneficial bacteria, fungi, and protozoa improve soil structure, speed up decomposition, and reduce plant disease.

  • Reduces household waste: Composting keeps up to 30% of food scraps out of the trash, saving space and trips to the curb.

  • Cuts landfill waste: Organic material decomposes slowly in landfills, wasting valuable nutrients—composting keeps them in the soil.

  • Better for the environment: Composting reduces reliance on chemical fertilizers, making it a simple and natural way to protect the planet.

The compost site is located at the I Wonder Garden at Hudson and Baylis Streets, inside the northeast corner of the parking lot. Bins are serviced weekly by Veteran Compost, and neighbors may drop off fruits, vegetables, coffee grounds, bread, and compostable packaging (no plastic, glass, oil, or metals).

The program was originally funded through a grant from Healthy Harbor/Pompeian Olive Oil. Unfortunately, that funding is no longer available. With community support, we can keep composting accessible in Canton and protect this valuable neighborhood resource. 🌿
