Public Safety Resources

The Holidays and crime seem to go hand-in-hand. To protect yourself from porch pirates, auto break-ins, and more, follow these helpful suggestions to reduce theft and increase safety in our neighborhood.

Be Proactive to avoid Package Theft

• Use the Amazon lockers inside local stores like the Rite Aid at 2801 Foster Ave.

• Invest in a package delivery box with a lockable secure storage compartment to be installed in front of your home. Examples: https://amzn.to/3xbmkfn or https://thd.co/3HP3jo2.

• Have packages delivered to work or ask a neighbor who you know is home during the day to accept delivery for you.

• If you are home to accept packages, put a sign on your door that reads “Delivery person, please knock loudly. We are home and don’t want our packages stolen. Thank you.” (It sounds simple, but it works every time!)

 Secure your Home and Auto

• Make sure that all exterior lights to your home or business (both front and back) are working and on at all times. A well-lit street has been shown to deter criminal activity. Please also mention it to your neighbors (politely), if you notice that their exterior lights need to be fixed/replaced.

• Secure mail slots to avoid break-ins. BSD recommends installing a mail slot hood if your door has a mail slot that is not along the bottom of the door. In other words, if your mail slot is within arm's reach of the doorknobs/latch/single cylinder deadbolts.

• Remove all valuables and visible items from parked vehicles.

• Do not leave your keys (home or auto) near the front door, in your car, or in plain sight.

Report Crimes

The Baltimore City Police Department asks neighbors to report crimes via this TIP email: SEDtips@baltimorepolice.org. Security camera footage and photos should be included. It is important to officially report all crimes, including package theft, because reporting drives resource allocation.

Block Captains

The CCA is looking for Block Captains to increase communication and help bring about more organization from the ground up throughout our neighborhood. If you are interested in representing your block, please email info@cantoncommunity.org and put Block Captain in the subject line.

Get Lit Canton
Residents and businesses are encouraged to install exterior lighting to improve the safety of our neighborhood. One way to light up your block is with the strings of café lights. Heading up this project for the CCA is our neighbor Chris Broughton. To get started, please follow the instructions in the infographic or email info@cantoncommunity.org.
