What is the role of the CCA's Economic Development Committee (EDC)?
The Canton Community Association's Economic Development Committee (EDC) works with the Baltimore City Department of Planning to support reasonable, scalable development in Canton that is in compliance with our guidelines. Although the EDC does not have any governing authority, it strives to represent the interests of the neighborhood in dealings with the City and State governments.
The EDC evaluates proposed developments on a case-by-case basis. The specifics of the project will determine if a letter of support or opposition will be written on behalf of the proposed development to the Board of Municipal Zoning Appeals (BMZA).
Why do I need to talk to the EDC?
Many times the BMZA will ask a developer if he/she has gone through the community review process and if he/she has obtained a letter of support from the community. The EDC seeks to work with both the developer and the city to better manage growth in the neighborhood. Bad architecture and design effects everyone -- for generations.
Do I have to work with the EDC?
No. However, a letter of support from the CCA may make the process of acquiring the permit(s) that you need for your project may be much easier.
What is the procedure for working with the EDC?
The EDC meets at least once a month, sometimes more depending upon the unique circumstances of the project in question. Please alert the EDC as soon as possible about your particular project so we can schedule your project in a timely manner.
Who is the contact person at the Department of Planning with whom the EDC communicates?
The EDC regularly speaks with Laurie Feinberg (410-396-1275). Laurie is the Community Planner for Southeast Baltimore. Laurie's e-mail address is Laurie.Feinberg@baltimorecity.gov. Does the EDC have any policies I should be aware of before my meeting?
The EDC is working with the Baltimore City Department of Planning on a set of proposed guidelines for development for Canton. Just as soon as they are finished and they have the approval of the CCA's Board of Directors, those policies will be listed on this page. Stay tuned.
What do I need to bring to my meeting with the EDC?
NOTE: You must bring all of these materials with you to your meeting with the EDC, otherwise, we will be unable to review your project.
- Fill out and submit the EDC Property Information Form
- Contact the EDC to request a opportunity to meet with the committee.
- Bring photos of the immediate block (front and back of the property) so we can get a better idea on how your project relates in both size and scale to that of your neighbors and the existing block.
Where does the EDC meet & when do the meetings start?
The EDC meets at the Broom Factory Building (1301 S. Baylis; corner of Boston Street and S. Baylis). Meetings begin at 6:30 pm. Other meeting information particulars can be found on the main EDC page.
