Project Blue Light Honors Fallen Police Officers
A little over 20 years ago, Dolly Craig, a Philadelphia mother-in-law of a slain police officer, put a blue light in her window during the Christmas season in his memory. Since then, Dolly's inspiration has grown into Project Blue Light, a national campaign to honor fallen officers as well as those who still serve their communities. In Baltimore, the Project Blue Light effort is being spearheaded by the Baltimore City Police Department, the Baltimore City Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 3 Memorial Board, and lodge President Laurie Platt, the surviving spouse of Sergeant John Platt.
"During the holidays, we are asking citizens to include at least one blue light in their holiday decorations," writes Lieutenant Colonel Odis L. Sistrunk, Jr., in an announcement to community leaders. "Put blue lights in your window and/or tie blue ribbons onto your vehicle antennas in honor of law enforcement officers who have given their lives in the line of duty. This is also to show support and appreciation to those officers who continue to put their lives on the line everyday."
